I believe that I can still eat healthy and save money on food. I may not always do it!… but I do think it’s possible. So this morning it is still 2 days till payday and the cupboards really are looking very bare. I found a tin of fruit and so I made up some powdered skim milk and made a smoothie.

Delicious!…. healthy…. & fast.

Here’s the breakdown:
Powdered skim milk 25g = 10.5 cents
Tinned peaches 200g = 47 cents
Water = free
Blend together with some ice cubes
Total cost = 57.5 cents.

Smoothies are pretty simple really. Find some fruit (fresh, tinned or frozen), add liquid (milk, yoghurt, soy, orange juice) and blend. Just add more or less liquid depending on how thick you like your smoothie. Chill the glass in the freezer to keep it icy cold or add a few ice cubes.

They really are inexpensive and healthy, especially if you use powdered milk, or plain no brand yoghurt and fruit bought on special. This is a good use for old or bruised fruit. When I get organised with my once a month cooking I might blend and freeze some cheap fruit ready for smoothies.

Now I see why all the cafes offer smoothies over summer. At $5- $6 a pop there is a very good profit in them. Anyone else like smoothies for breakfast?
